NPD Report Shows Consumers Willing to Spend
for High-End Single Serve Coffee Makers

Port Washington, NY, March 8, 2007 – The NPD Group, Inc., leading provider of consumer and retail information, released its December 2006 highlight report on single serve coffee machines. Based on NPD’s retail tracking service, the report shows the success of the high-end brands and how they have helped drive the dramatic growth in single serve coffeemaker sales. Sales for products, priced $100 or more, grew by more than 90%. “The market has changed dramatically over the past two years, with a clear shift toward higher priced machines.” said Peter Goldman, president of The NPD Group, Inc.’s home business unit. “The average price of a single serve machine in 2006 was $85 compared to just $54 in 2004.  That’s a 25% increase over the past 2 years.”

Additionally, this highlight report shows that the month of December is in fact a key selling period for single serve machines. Thirty-six percent of total single serve coffee machine sales in 2006 occurred during the month of December.  In contrast, 22% of drip coffeemaker sales occurred during the same period. “Despite the 25% increase in average price, single serve remains a popular gift item during the 2006 holiday season,” said Goldman.
