Netflix

Netflix viewing hours in April were down 1% year over year, driven by declines in licensed content viewership and inventory. Hours watched of original content grew 15% year over year, as original inventory increased 25% versus April 2021. Originals became a larger share of total viewership, accounting for 43%. The top series watched in April was the new Netflix reality show The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On. Two seasons of new licensed shows added to Netflix in April made it to the top five: Season 5 of the crime drama Better Call Saul (#3) and season 10 of the reality series Married at First Sight (#5).

Originals became a larger share of total viewership, accounting for 43%.

Hulu

Hulu hours watched were up 19% in April year over year, driven by growth in original viewership and original inventory. Hulu reached 1.8 billion hours watched in the four weeks of April, the highest since May 2021 (a month with five weeks). Series also drove viewership growth in April; the top five series watched made up 25% more hours than the top five in March. The top title in March, season 3 of 9-1-1: Lone Star, was the top title again with new episodes continuing to air through April. New seasons of other non-original shows 9-1-1 and This Is Us were #2 and #3 for the month, as the seasons aired on linear and released on Hulu the next day. 

Hulu reached 1.8 billion hours watched in the four weeks of April, the highest since May 2021.

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video hours watched were down 20% in April, driven by declining inventory available. Viewership of original content was down 9% year over year, but count of original titles available grew 15%, and originals made up the top five series viewed in April. The sci-fi series Outer Range, which premiered April 15, was the #1 watched series despite being on the platform for just two weeks.

March 2022

Netflix

Netflix viewing hours in March were down 6% year over year, driven by declines in licensed content viewership and inventory. The amount of original content available grew 25% year over year, driven by several new series and movies debuting in March. The top series watched in March was Pieces of Her, a thriller drama based on a novel of the same name; it debuted on March 4At #2 was season 2 of the period drama Bridgerton, which debuted on March 25 and was an immediate success. With just seven days on the platform in the month, the season made up 102 million hours, just 3 million short of the #1 title. 

The amount of original content available on Netflix grew 25% year over year, led by March content debuts.

Hulu

Hulu hours watched in March were up 12% year over year. This was driven by growth of original content, whose viewership was up 183% in March with growth in available inventory. Hulu reached 1.7 billion hours watched in the four weeks of March. This was on par with January 2022, which had five weeks within the month. Series drove the strong viewership in March; the top five series watched made up 32% more hours in March than the top five in February. Hulu originals’ viewership was driven by series, led by new series The Dropout, which debuted on March 3 and was the #2 title for the month. 

Hulu’s hours watched of original series increased 183% year over year.

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video hours watched were down 20% in March, driven by year-over-year declining inventory available. Despite four of the top five series in March being Amazon originals and growth of 22% in available original content, original viewership was down 10% year over year. This is largely due to comping against the March 4, 2021, release of comedy film Coming 2 America, which brought in 27 million hours last year, over double the number of hours of the top five movies in March 2022. On the series side, new episodes of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel that released weekly and the release of a new season of sci-fi series Upload brought these two into the top five for the month.

Four of the top five series in March were Amazon originals, with growth of 22% in available original content.

February 2022

Netflix

Netflix viewing hours in February were down 11% year over year. This was driven by a decline in viewership (-31%) and non-original inventory (-19%). The amount of original content available grew 23% year over year, led by several new series that debuted in February. The top two series watched were Inventing Anna, a limited series inspired by the true story of Anna Sorokin (released February 11), and All of Us Are Dead, a Korean zombie apocalypse series based on a digital comic (released January 28). Movies are becoming a larger portion of Netflix content, accounting for 23% of hours watched in February 2022 compared to 19% in February 2021. 

The amount of original content available on Netflix grew 23% year over year, led by several new series that debuted in February.

Hulu

Hulu hours watched in February were down 12% year over year and available inventory declined 34%. However, hours watched of original series increased 194% year over year, and Hulu’s original inventory grew 19%. This was driven by viewership of the new series Pam & Tommy, which was the top-watched title for the month and accounted for 19 million hours. It is Hulu’s latest biographical drama series after the success of the platform’s popular 2019 original The Act, which followed the story of Dee Dee and Gypsy Rose Blanchard.

Hulu’s hours watched of original series increased 194% year over year. Its original inventory grew 19%.

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video hours watched in February were down 39%, and inventory declined 58% year over year. Amazon Channels’ viewership continued to grow, up 25% compared to February 2021. The top channels watched in February year over year were IMDb TV (+9%), Paramount+ (+88%), and BritBox (+21%). Two non-Prime titles made the Top 5 series for the month: IMDb TV’s Judy Justice and Paramount+’s 1883. Viewership of originals also fueled February growth, driven by the new season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which premiered February 18 and released new episodes weekly.

Amazon Channels’ viewership continued to grow, up 25% compared to February 2021.
