Netflix viewing hours in September decreased 11% month over month and 8% year over year. The decline was driven by non-original viewership, with hours watched down 22% year over year. Original viewership increased 11% versus last month. Series viewership was led by DAHMER – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, a new crime series that debuted on September 21.

Originals made up the top five watched series in September 2022.

Hulu

Hours watched increased 48% year over year in September. Viewership for the month was driven by originals, with hours watched up 170% year over year and two original series in the top five. Season 2 of crime drama Only Murders in the Building was September’s top title, moving up from the #3 spot last month. Overall, series viewership grew 53% year over year, driven by licensed titles currently airing on linear.

Amazon Prime Video hours watched in September declined 37% versus last year, as more licensed titles left the platform. Original hours watched grew 4% year over year. The top five watched series and top viewed movie in September were originals.

August 2022

Netflix

Netflix viewing hours in August decreased 7% month over month and declined 9% year over year. Original inventory increased 25% versus August 2021 and viewership was up +17% year over year. Originals made up the entirety of the top five series and four of the top five movies watched in August. Series viewership was led by The Sandman, a new series based on a DC Comics book.

Hours watched increased 28% year over year in August. Accounting for differing month lengths, average hours watched grew 61% in August 2022. Viewership for the month was driven by originals, with hours watched up 180% year over year and two original series in the top five in August. Overall series viewership grew 29% year over year, driven by licensed titles Love Island (UK) and America’s Got Talent, which aired on linear and released on Hulu the next day.

Amazon Prime Video hours watched in the four weeks of August declined 39% compared to the five weeks of August 2021. Accounting for varying weeks, average hours watched were down 24% year over year. Declines were driven by licensed content, down 48% in hours watched in August as more licensed titles left the platform. Original hours watched grew 4% year over year, driven by August’s top five series watched. Once again, the top five series watched for the month were originals, led by the sports comedy drama A League of Their Own.

July 2022

Netflix

Netflix viewing hours in July were up 6% month over month but were flat year over year. Through year-to-date July, Netflix viewing declined 2%, but the last few months have rebounded. Inventory of viewed titles was slightly up (+1%) versus June but still declined compared to last year, driven by a decreasing number of licensed titles. In July 2022, hours watched of original content grew 24% year over year, as original inventory increased 25% versus July 2021.

Originals made up the entire Top 5 Watched Series list in July 2022.

Hulu

Hulu viewership in July was driven by originals. Hours watched increased more than 200% year over year and two original series ranked in July’s top five series. Comedy drama The Bear debuted on June 23 and ranked #2 for July with 23 million hours watched. Two weeks after the series’ release, it was renewed for a second season. Season 2 of comedy mystery Only Murders in the Building, which released weekly starting on June 28, was the other original in July’s top five series and was renewed for a third season. 

Originals drove Hulu viewership in July and hours watched increased more than 200% year over year.

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video hours watched were up 10% and original viewership increased 70% in July versus last year. July’s top five series watched were all originals, led by The Terminal List. The top show watched outside of Prime Video for the month was Freevee original Hollywood Houselift with Jeff Lewis, a reality series that premiered on June 10.
