September’s Brisk Sales Continue Games Industry Growth

September 2018 spending across video game hardware, software, accessories, and game cards grew 7% compared to year-ago, reaching $1.4 billion. Year-to-date spending across video game categories was up 16% compared to the same period last year, to $8.9 billion. Here’s a closer look . . .


Console, portable, and PC games software spending is up 5% vs. a year ago. Sales reached $3.9 billion!

This game posted double-digit percentage dollar sales growth when compared to the last installment a year ago.

Horizon 4

Forza Horizon 4 achieved the highest launch month dollar sales in Forza franchise history, and it’s the biggest launch for a racing game on any Xbox platform in history!


Hardware spending has increased 18% YTD, to $2.4 billion.

Xbox One hardware dollar sales grew more than 30% compared to a year ago.

That’s an increase of more than 60% so far this year!

Accessories and Game Cards

Total spending on accessories and game cards grew 43% vs. a year ago.

Accessories and game cards reached an all-time high of $323 million in September!

For the first time in tracked history, both September and YTD game card spending now exceeds that of accessories.
