The Current Skincare Transformation Agent: Sales of Facial and Body Devices Continue Rising in the U.S.

Port Washington, NY, March 26, 2015 – Devices have carved out a place within the U.S. skincare industry, nearly doubling in prestige beauty dollar sales since 2012, and bringing beauty treatment and skin nourishment to another level, according to global information company The NPD Group, Inc.

In the 12 months ending February 2015 (Mar’14-Feb’15), prestige body and facial devices grew in both dollars and units. Specifically, laser/light therapy device types are gaining popularity, with over 90 percent growth in dollar sales and 30 percent in unit sales after two years of decline. Dollar sales of cleansing devices, which make up the lion’s share of the market, grew 12 percent, while units increased by 29 percent.

“Devices have been pivotal in helping consumers rediscover facial care to start before corrective anti-aging treatment,” said Karen Grant, global beauty industry analyst, The NPD Group. “Beauty is expanding to embrace a wider range of options and benefits, especially when it comes to skincare.”

Dollar sales of facial and body devices outpaced other prestige facial and body skincare subsegments during this time, as well as the prestige skincare industry as a whole, which grew 2 percent.

“Manufacturers and retailers have an opportunity to map new paths for skincare growth as consumers have found value in enhancing their skincare regimen with devices and other alternative formats for care,” added Grant.
