Black Friday 2013: Appliances Win With 20 Percent Growth

The 2013 Black Friday shopping week (Nov. 24-30, 2013) resulted in a 20 percent increase in small appliance dollar sales, but less than 1 percent unit growth compared to the 2012 Black Friday week (Nov. 18-24, 2012). This one week represented 6 percent of both unit and dollar sales for the last 52 weeks.

This year, single-serve coffeemakers, waffle makers, and electric grills are the three category segments among the top 10 selling appliances in consumers’ carts that were not in the top 10 for Black Friday 2012.

“Basic needs and convenience clearly drove appliance sales during the 2013 Black Friday shopping week. But, the desire for something extra was more apparent this year than last year, with consumers taking the basics to the next level and showing their willingness to trade up,” said Debra Mednick, executive director and home industry analyst.
